Mt. Moran and the Teton Range — Willow Flats Overlook, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

From the Willow Flats Overlook in Grand Teton National Park, the landscape stretches across a broad expanse of willow and sage before rising dramatically into the Teton Range.

On this morning, low clouds settled into the mountains, drifting across the upper slopes and partially obscuring the highest terrain. Mt. Moran remained prominent beneath the cloud layer while occasional breaks allowed soft light to reach portions of the lower mountains.

There was no dramatic storm unfolding—just the constantly changing relationship between mountains, clouds, and light.

Willow Flats provided a quiet foreground to the scene. Its layers of vegetation, timber, and open country gradually lead the eye toward the mountains, where sharp granite forms disappear into the clouds above.

Black and white seemed particularly suited to the moment. Without color competing for attention, the photograph becomes about texture and tonal relationships: the dark vegetation of the flats, illuminated mountainsides, rugged rock, and soft clouds wrapping around the peaks.

The Tetons don't always need to reveal themselves completely. Sometimes what the clouds choose to hide is as much a part of the landscape as what they allow us to see.
